I have researched this treatment somewhat and accordingly i am taking 20 mgs every other day for the next 30 days. I have had surprisingly few insurance problems with patients on accutane. I received packages of 20 mg accutane pills.
Does blue cross blue shield cover accutane? That means elective and cosmetic dermatology procedures are usually not covered. This is because treatment of acne is what insurance.
So the dx has to be acne for plan coverage. From what i understand about blue cross, they don't cover accutane outright like other medications, so in order for you to be covered by your insurance, your doctor will need to submit a medical necessity form to blue cross which indicates that there is a need for you to be on a course of accutane under his supervision. I have blue cross blue shield of ga and the blue choice option through the tjx companies (my mothers work).

Most insurance benefits do not offer coverage for treatments that aren’t considered medically necessary. I am newly taking accutane and i am 18 yrs. Also, you have to take into consideration that many insurance plans now have out of pocket deductibles on prescriptions too.
One hmo limits the course of treatment to 5 months for some reason. I couldn't get it because it was not covered by my insurance, and it was going to be over 400 bucks to pay out of pocket. It says on my insurance card medical copays, $20 office visit, and $100 er.
Right now i'm on blue cross/blue shield and they would cover most of it. They feel that unless it is life threatening like skin cancer, it is more for a cosmetic reason. I work in a pharmacy and a lot of people

My insurance does cover accutane (generic) but will let the prescription lapse past that monthly mark, making it next to impossible to continue taking it on a regular basis if prescribed that way. There are different branded generic versions of it as well, and some insurances choose to cover some and not others. I work in the medical field, i know that even ppo's do not cover the cost of accutane.
Most insurances seem to cover the treatment.
